There he stood, facing me with gritted teeth in the shape of a classic fake smile. I saw his real smile about a split second right before and then it melted into the version that he has to hold until I let down my camera from my face. I know why fake smiles exist: we create them in childhood while a loving family member is taking ten photographs when they only need one. They exist not because we’re smile-level happy in that moment but because we’re expected to look smile-level happy for this photoshoot. It’s a show. And, if I am honest, I have a fake smile too and it’s not cute at all! But back to Gage’s story; I have several tricks I use in situations like this, during photoshoots, when the fake smile makes an appearance. My favorite is the “giggle” which in a variety of different ways brings about genuine laughter. However, this Broken Arrow High School Senior kept his teeth clinched and gave me a sound that was much like Elmer Fudd laughing! The result? I cracked up immediately! I let down the camera from my face and doubled over laughing so hard. I had never had anyone laugh like that for me! It worked, the next time I tried the giggle, he started with the Elmer Fudd laugh which transitioned to a real smile.
Gage’s senior photoshoot experience was my last photoshoot for 2018 and what a way to go out! We laughed so hard during his fall photoshoot in late November. The orange color in the trees was perfect and his photographs in front of them are some of my favorites! For this Broken Arrow Senior’s photoshoot we went to Ray Harral Nature Park in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma on a warm and sunny fall day! Gage had beautiful weather!!
Gage (and Erin and Trey),
First, CONGRATULATIONS on Broken Arrow Football’s recent win at state! You trained with that team and supported them all year long; its a win for you too!! Second, thank you for giving me the honor in capturing your senior photos. I had a blast walking through the park in search of those perfect orange trees, laughing about the three Thanksgivings you went to! Here are just a few highlights from your senior photoshoot experience.
